Skin tint and tinted moisturizer: your skin, only more even

What is a skin tint or tinted moisturizer?

A skin tint is a fluid, lightweight formula with a small amount of pigment. A tinted moisturizer works the same way but has a texture that feels more like a cream. In practice the names are used interchangeably: both give light, often buildable coverage and a natural or dewy finish. The aim isn't to cover everything, but to slightly soften redness and small imperfections so your skin looks rested. Many formulas combine the tint with caring ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid in the L'Oréal Paris True Match Getint Serum and ceramides in the Danessa Myricks Yummy Skin Serum Skin Tint.

Skin tint vs foundation: what's the difference?

The biggest difference is the coverage. A foundation is made to even out your skin and camouflage imperfections, with medium to full coverage. A skin tint contains less pigment, so your own skin stays visible. That also makes a skin tint more forgiving: a shade that isn't quite a perfect match is less noticeable, and you can quickly work it in with your fingers.

  • Coverage: skin tint light to sometimes medium, foundation medium to full.
  • Finish: skin tint usually dewy or natural, foundation from matte to glow.
  • Feel: skin tint lightweight and smooth, foundation depending on the formula.
  • Application: skin tint goes on easily with your fingers, foundation often with a brush or sponge.

Want a bit more coverage than a skin tint but less than a classic foundation? Then also take a look at BB cream, or choose a light liquid foundation that you can apply thinly.

Tinted moisturizer, serum or balm: what types of skin tint are there?

  • Tinted moisturizer: a creamy formula with light, buildable coverage. Think of the Catrice Skin Like Tinted Moisturizer and the Mixsoon PDRN Collagen Tinted Moisturizer, which is available in several shades and gives a dewy finish.
  • Skin tint: a thin, fluid formula for a fresh glow, such as the NYX Professional Makeup Buttermelt Glaze Soft Glow Skin Tint, the Revolution Superdewy SPF30 Skin Tint and the Astra Make Up Filterdrop Skin Tint.
  • Tinted serum: even lighter, with a serum-like texture that you apply with a few drops. For example the L'Oréal Paris True Match Getint Serum and the La Crique Hydrating Tinted Serum.
  • Tinted balm: a solid balm that melts into your skin as you apply it. The L'Oréal Paris True Match Tinted Balm comes in a compact case with a mirror, so it's handy on the go.

Which skin tint suits your skin?

If you have dry skin, choose a tinted moisturizer or balm with a dewy finish; they feel smooth and make dry patches less noticeable. If your skin gets shiny quickly, a formula with a more matte finish works better, such as the Wet n Wild Bare Focus Tinted Skin Perfector with its semi-matte finish. Want a little more coverage where you need it? Go for a buildable formula such as the Astra Filterdrop Skin Tint, which lets you build coverage layer by layer. When choosing your shade, pay particular attention to your undertone: because a skin tint is sheer, a shade that matches your undertone matters more than getting the exact lightness right. Use the sidebar filters for vegan or fragrance-free to quickly find what suits you.

Skin tint with SPF

Several skin tints in this range contain a sun protection factor. The NYX Professional Makeup Buttermelt Glaze Soft Glow Skin Tint, the Catrice Skin Like Tinted Moisturizer and the Revolution Superdewy SPF30 Skin Tint all have SPF 30; with the Revolution it's a mineral SPF based on zinc oxide. That way you combine your light base with SPF in one product.

How do you apply a tinted moisturizer?

Start with clean skin and let your skincare absorb for a moment. If you want your base to last longer, apply a makeup primer first. Put a small amount of skin tint on your fingers and start where you want the most coverage, usually around your nose and on your cheeks. Work from the center outwards and gently pat the product into your skin. Need more coverage? Apply a second thin layer only on those areas, or touch up small imperfections with a concealer. Want to set your look without losing the glow? Use a setting spray rather than a thick layer of powder.

Prefer a different texture to a skin tint?

A skin tint isn't the best choice for every day or every look. Looking for a compact formula that's easy to touch up? Then cushion foundation is a nice middle ground. Love a richer texture? Take a look at cream foundation, and if you want a base that dries down matte straight away, powder foundation is a better fit.
