Cushion foundation
Want a foundation that's quick to apply, easy to carry and can be touched up on the go in a few taps? Then a cushion foundation is exactly what you're looking for. The compact case holds a cushion soaked with liquid foundation, with a puff and often a mirror. You dab the formula onto your skin and build the coverage until you're happy. Here you'll find cushion foundations from TIRTIR, Essence, Catrice, Missha, Tocobo, Revolution and L'Oréal Paris, among others, from matte to dewy and from medium to full coverage.
Cushion foundation: even coverage from a compact case
What is a cushion foundation?
A cushion foundation is a liquid foundation in a sponge-like cushion. By pressing the puff onto the cushion, you pick up a small amount each time. That makes it easy to dose, and you don't need a bottle or brush. The case fits in any bag, which makes a cushion ideal for touch-ups. The Essence Silky Cushion Foundation and the Catrice Invisible Cover Cushion Foundation come with a sponge and a mirror in the case, and the Missha Magic Cushion Cover Lasting has a hybrid sponge for even application.
Why is Korean cushion foundation so popular?
The cushion is a typical K-beauty product, and Korean cushions often combine makeup with caring ingredients. The TIRTIR Mask Fit Red Cushion, one of our most popular cushions, gives full coverage with a semi-matte finish and contains niacinamide and propolis extract. The Parnell Cicamanu Serum Cushion contains centella asiatica and ceramides, and the Tocobo Apple Dewy Fit Cushion is vegan and contains hyaluronic acid. You can see the influence outside Korea too: the Revolution Superdewy Cushion Foundation is inspired by K-beauty.
Cushion vs liquid foundation: what's the difference?
The difference isn't always in the formula, because a cushion also contains liquid foundation. The difference is mainly in the packaging and the application. You apply a liquid foundation with a brush, sponge or your fingers, and it's great when you're building your full base at home. You dab a cushion onto your skin with the puff, which is quicker and gives an airy layer. Because you pick up a little at a time, you build the coverage step by step. Want something even lighter? Take a look at BB cream or skin tint. The Purito Wonder Releaf Centella BB Cushion even combines a BB cream with a cushion.
Matte or dewy cushion: which finish do you choose?
- Matte and semi-matte: the TIRTIR Mask Fit AI Filter Cushion gives a velvety matte finish. The Catrice Invisible Cover Cushion Foundation has a blurred matte finish and is water- and sweat-resistant. The Missha Magic Cushion Cover Lasting dries down semi-matte.
- Natural: the Essence Silky Cushion Foundation has a silky finish with medium, buildable coverage, and the L'Oréal Paris x Mugler Subtle Glow Cushion Foundation gives an airbrush effect.
- Dewy: for a fresh glow, choose the Revolution Superdewy Cushion Foundation, the Tocobo Apple Dewy Fit Cushion or the Trouble Maker Button Pusher Air Cushion Foundation.
If your skin gets shiny quickly, a matte cushion keeps looking good for longer. If you have dry skin, a dewy cushion often feels more comfortable.
Cushion foundation with SPF
Several cushions in this range have a sun protection factor. The Missha Magic Cushion Cover Lasting, the TIRTIR Mask Fit Cushion and the Tocobo Apple Dewy Fit Cushion have SPF 50+. The TIRTIR Mask Fit AI Filter Cushion and the Catrice Invisible Cover Cushion Foundation have SPF 30. That way you combine your base and SPF in one product.
How do you find the right cushion shade?
You can't just test a cushion in a shop, so choosing a shade can be tricky. Besides how light your skin is, pay particular attention to your undertone: TIRTIR puts a C, N or W in the shade name, for cool, neutral or warm. Not sure? The TIRTIR Mask Fit Red Cushion 3 Shade Trial Kit and 6 Shade Trial Kit contain several shades, so you can compare at home at your own pace. The Mask Fit Red Cushion Mini is handy as a travel size. You'll find more tips on choosing your shade on the foundation page.
How do you apply a cushion foundation?
Gently press the puff into the cushion and dab the foundation onto the center of your face first. Work outwards with small tapping motions; dabbing instead of wiping keeps the layer even. For more coverage, dab a second thin layer where you want it. Then touch up small imperfections with a concealer. Clean the puff regularly so application stays nice and even.
