Eyeliner: the fastest way to make your eyes stand out

Which kind of eyeliner suits you?

There are four formats, and they really do different things. An eye pencil is the easiest place to start: you need nothing else and you can make the line as soft or as sharp as you like. Kajal and kohl belong here too, ideal for your waterline and for an intense, smokey rim. A liquid eyeliner or eyeliner pen gives you the sharpest line: a felt tip draws an even stroke, a brush tip lets you decide how thick it gets. A gel eyeliner sits in between, creamy and intense, in a pot with a brush or as a gel pencil. Which eyeliner suits your eye shape?

That often matters more than the formula. If you have a hooded lid, keep the line thin in the inner corner and take the wing up more steeply so it does not disappear when you open your eye. With round eyes, extend the line outwards instead to make them look longer. And with small eyes, a light colour on the waterline works better than a thick black line.

How do you apply eyeliner?

• Start on a clean, dry and oil free lid. An eyeshadow primer or a thin layer of powder helps your liner stay put.
• Draw small dashes along your lash line, then join them into one line. That is more accurate than one long stroke.
• Work from your inner corner outwards and make the line slightly thicker towards the outer corner.
• Look straight into the mirror with your eye half open rather than upwards, so you see how the line will actually sit.
• For touch ups, an angled cotton bud with a little remover on it works best.

How do you do a winged eyeliner?

Rest your liner against your lower lash line and follow that direction diagonally upwards towards the end of your brow. That little diagonal stroke is your wing. Then connect the tip back to your lash line so you get a small triangle, and fill it in. Finish one eye before you move to the other and only compare at the end, otherwise you keep correcting.

Eyeliner on your waterline: what works and what does not?

Only a pencil or kajal belongs on the inner rim of your lid. A liquid liner is not made for that. A black kajal on your waterline makes your eyes look more intense, while a white or nude one makes them look bigger and more awake. Pick a waterproof version there if you can, because a pencil has a hard time on that damp rim.

Eyeliner in colour: from deep black to burgundy

Black is the eternal favourite and works with every eye colour and any outfit. If black feels too harsh, brown is softer and more natural. Waterproof eyeliner: will it last all day?

A waterproof eyeliner repels moisture, so sweat, tears and rain will not make your line run. Do note the difference with smudge proof: that means it will not move when you rub it or when your own lid presses against it. If your lids get oily quickly, you actually want both.

How do you take eyeliner off?

A regular eyeliner comes off with your usual cleanser. For waterproof you need an oil based cleanser or a biphase remover, because water alone will not shift it. Hold a cotton pad on your closed eye for a few seconds, let it soak in and then wipe gently outwards. That way you do not rub, and your lashes stay put.
