What can you do with an eyebrow pencil?
Three things, and each one wants a different tip. Filling gaps works best with a fine tip in short upward strokes. Sharpening the shape goes faster with a broader, softer nib. And extending the tail of your brow works best with a pencil you can keep sharp. A brow pencil performs best on dry skin. With foundation underneath, the pigment grabs less and fades sooner.
Which eyebrow pencil suits you?
- Micro tip. A very fine tip of around a millimetre. For natural looking hairs and for making sparse brows look fuller.
- Classic tip. A little broader, fills faster and is more forgiving when you are in a hurry.
- Retractable or sharpenable. A retractable pencil is handy on the go. A sharpenable one stays crisper, which is nicer for fine strokes.
- With a spoolie. Many pencils have a brush on the other end to blend the product out. That step is what separates drawn from natural.
How do you fill in your brows with a pencil?
- Brush your brows up first so you can see where the real gaps are.
- Mark the start, the arch and the end. Hold a brush straight up along your nose for the start, at an angle over your pupil for the arch and towards your outer corner for the end.
- Draw short upward strokes in the direction your hairs grow. Press lightly.
- Work from the tail towards the start. The inner part of your brow should stay the lightest.
- Blend with the spoolie and set with a brow gel.
Which shade should you pick?
The simple rule: stay with your hair colour or go one shade lighter. If you are blonde, pick a taupe or light brown rather than a grey. With dark hair, one shade lighter usually reads more natural than black.

Pencil, brow pen or powder?
A pencil gives you control and a soft, natural line. If you want crisper hairs that last longer, a brow pen with liquid ink or a microblading tip makes more sense. If you are after a soft, powdery fill across the whole brow, you end up at eyebrow powder. Plenty of people combine two: pencil for the tail, powder for the rest.
