What exactly is a liquid lipstick?
The difference with a regular lipstick is in the formula. A classic lipstick is a solid bullet that sits on your lips; a liquid lipstick is a fluid that dries down into a thin, flexible layer on your lips. That makes the colour more intense, the coverage higher and the wear time many times longer — eight hours is no exception with a lot of formulas. The price you pay for that is that you don't just touch it up: you take it off and start again.
Matte, satin or a tint?
Most liquid lipsticks are matte, and that is what they are known for: flat, pigmented, no shine. There are satin-soft versions too that feel a bit more comfortable. If you would rather have a lighter, sheer colour that sinks in instead of sitting on top, then have a look at lip tint — that is the same category, but with a watery formula and a much lighter result.
How do you apply a liquid lipstick?
Make sure your lips are dry; the formula grips badly on balm. Start in the middle of your top lip, work towards the corners of your mouth and then do your bottom lip. Do it in one thin layer and let it dry completely before you press your lips together — that is the mistake that causes most of the patchiness. Once it is dry, you can add a second layer wherever you want more coverage. A lip liner beforehand keeps the edge sharp.
And how do you get it off again?
Not with water — that is exactly what the formula resists. Use an oil-based remover or a lip oil: let it sit for half a minute and then wipe gently. Scrubbing doesn't help and only irritates. After that a layer of lip balm, because a long day of matte lipstick is drying.
