Multichrome Eyeshadow
Multichrome eyeshadow bounces the light back in several colours at once. Look at it straight on and you see purple; turn your head and it goes green or gold. That colour shift comes from pigments built out of multiple layers, and the effect cannot be copied with any ordinary eyeshadow. What is multichrome eyeshadow?
The pigments in a multichrome are built from thin layers that reflect light at different depths. So you don't see one colour but a gradient that moves with your viewing angle and with the light in the room. You'll find them as a pressed pan, as loose flakes and as a liquid formula with an applicator; the liquid versions also sit on our liquid eyeshadow page. The chunkier the pigment, the stronger the shift and the more you need a tacky base to hold it.
Multichrome, duochrome and chrome: what's the difference?
The terms get used interchangeably, but there is a real difference. A duochrome shifts between two colours, from pink to gold for example. A multichrome runs through three or more, like purple to blue to green. Chrome without a prefix usually means a mirror-like metallic effect with no colour change, and holographic refers to a fine rainbow sheen across the whole shade. In practice brands mix the words up: Wet 'n Wild calls its Chameleon Chrome Foil a chrome while it is a genuine multichrome. So look mainly at the photo and at the colours the brand names.
How to apply multichrome eyeshadow
These pigments need a tacky base, or they fall off and you won't see the shift:
- Set an eyeshadow primer or a glitter gel on your lid first and let it dry down almost, but not quite, fully.
- Want the strongest possible shift? Lay a black or dark base underneath. The same multichrome gives a completely different colour over black than over a nude.
- Pat the pigment on with a flat eyeshadow brush or with your finger; sweeping breaks the pigment layers and dulls the effect.
- Blend the edges only and leave the centre intact.
- Build with a second layer if you want more depth, and put nothing over the top.
