Makeup sponges & powder puffs
Makeup sponges and powder puffs for an even base
A makeup sponge works differently from a brush. Where a brush spreads product and builds coverage, a sponge presses the product into your skin and lifts off the excess. The result is a thinner, fresher layer that looks like your own skin. At Boozyshop you will find makeup sponges in different shapes, silicone blenders and powder puffs to press powder in, plus the cases and holders to keep them clean and protected.
What is a makeup sponge and what do you use it for?
A makeup sponge is a soft, bouncy sponge you use to apply foundation, concealer, cream blush or bronzer. You do not use it with sweeping motions but with short dabs, so you press the product into the skin instead of dragging it across. That keeps dry patches and the fine lines around your nose and eyes even, and you will not see any streaks. The wide side is for your cheeks and forehead, the tip for smaller spots like your inner corner and the sides of your nose.
Do you have to wet a sponge?
For most sponges, yes. Wet the sponge under the tap and squeeze it out well until it no longer drips but still feels damp. A damp sponge absorbs less foundation, so you waste less product, and it gives a fresher finish that sits more thinly on the skin. A dry sponge picks up more product and therefore puts down more coverage, which is handy when you want to cover a spot. A silicone blender does not get wet: it absorbs no product at all and therefore works with the smallest amount of foundation.
Which sponge shape do you choose?
The classic teardrop sponge is the all rounder: round for large areas, pointed for precision. A sponge with a flat side puts product down more sharply and with more control, for example along your jawline or to set concealer under your eyes. A mini sponge is meant for small corners and for cream products on your lids. Plenty of people keep two: a big one for the base and a small one for concealer and detail work.
What does a powder puff do?
A powder puff is not a sponge for foundation but a velvety pad you use to press powder into the skin. That pressing is exactly why a puff is the favourite for baking: you lay a thick layer of loose powder over your concealer, let it sit for a moment and then sweep the excess away with a big brush. A powder puff is also lovely for touching up with pressed powder, because it picks up more powder than a brush and places it more precisely on your T zone.
Beautyblender and other well known sponges
Beautyblender is the sponge that made the teardrop shape famous and the one most people picture when they think of a makeup sponge. Alongside Beautyblender you will find sponges from Real Techniques, Boozyshop and other brands here, in different densities. A denser sponge gives slightly more coverage, a softer and airier one gives a thinner layer. Looking for one specific brand? Have a look at its own brand page, and if you want to compare, all the sponges sit together here.
How do you clean a makeup sponge?
Wash your sponge after every use, or at least a few times a week. Wet it, work in a mild soap or a dedicated sponge cleanser and squeeze it out under running water until no more colour comes out. Then press the moisture out in a towel and let the sponge air dry in the open, not inside a closed case. A sponge sitting damp in a bag is a comfortable spot for bacteria, and that is exactly what you do not want on your skin.
When do you replace your sponge?
Count on around three months with daily use. If the sponge gets harder, an edge tears off or it still smells of product or stays stained after washing, it is time for a new one. A powder puff lasts longer, but swap that out regularly too and wash it just as often as your sponge.
Storing and travelling
At home, let your sponge dry in a holder or on a clean surface with air around it. If you take it with you, use a sponge case with holes so it can keep ventilating and does not get squashed in your bag. That is more hygienic and your sponge keeps its shape.
