What is a mascara primer?
A primer is a creamy base coat with a brush much like a mascara wand. The formula usually contains waxes, fibres and caring ingredients. Together they coat every lash with a thin film for your mascara to hold on to. Most primers are white or off-white so you can see where you have been; that colour disappears under your mascara.
What does a primer do for your lashes?
Three things at once. It adds thickness at the root, so your lashes look fuller without needing three coats of mascara. It adds grip, so your mascara is less likely to slide down or transfer. And it holds the curl better, which helps if your lashes naturally grow downwards. A primer does not replace your mascara, it gets more out of it.
How do you apply a mascara primer?
Start with clean, dry lashes. Place the brush at the root and work up towards the tips in a zigzag motion, just as you would with mascara. Then do not wait too long: most primers work best when you apply your mascara while the primer is still slightly damp. Once it has dried completely, your mascara grips less well and clumps more easily.
Primer, serum or a second coat of mascara?
They solve different problems. A primer works instantly and sits under your mascara. A lash serum is long-term care, used in the evening on bare lashes. And a second coat of mascara adds volume too, but gets heavy and clumpy faster than a primer plus one coat. If you mainly want thickness, have a look at volume mascara; if it is length you are after, at lengthening mascara.
Who is a primer worth it for?
For anyone with fine or short lashes, for anyone who wants a defined eye look all day, and for occasions where your mascara really has to stay put. If you prefer a natural look, a primer is less necessary: one coat of mascara is usually enough.
