Hair Mist & Sprays

A hair mist is a fine spray you apply to dry or damp hair and leave in. Unlike a mask or a conditioner it works in between: hydrating your lengths on day two, taming frizz before you head out, waking up your curls or protecting your hair before you blow dry. This page holds all the conditioning mists and sprays, plus the hair perfumes that simply make your hair smell good.

Hair mist and spray: care you apply in between washes

Conditioning mist or hair perfume: what is the difference?

A conditioning mist contains active ingredients such as protein, panthenol, rice water, rosemary or an oil. Those do something to your hair: hydrate, repair, add shine or fight frizz. A hair perfume is there for the scent and is formulated lighter than a regular perfume, so it does not dry your hair out.

Do not spray a regular eau de parfum into your hair. It contains a lot of alcohol, which leaves your hair dull and dry. Brands like Kitsch, Neqi, Headshock and Lee Stafford make perfumes designed specifically for hair.

How do you use a hair mist?

  1. Shake the bottle, because most mists hold water and oil together.
  2. Hold the bottle twenty to thirty centimetres away from your hair.
  3. Spray the lengths and the ends, not your scalp. That is what makes hair greasy faster.
  4. Distribute the mist with your fingers or a comb and let it soak in.
  5. Blow drying or straightening afterwards? Pick a mist with heat protection.

Two to four spritzes is enough. Use more and your hair goes flat and starts to feel sticky.

Which mist suits your hair?

  • Dry or damaged hair: a mist with protein, keratin or an oil. Want more nourishment, have a look at hair masks and hair oil.
  • Curls: a refresh spray with water as the first ingredient wakes your curls back up between two wash days. Every CG proof product sits under the Curly Girl Method.
  • Frizzy hair: an anti frizz or smoothing spray lays the cuticle flat and keeps humidity out. More options under frizzy hair.
  • Knots: a detangling spray or primer lets the comb glide through, on wet hair too.
  • Fine hair or a sensitive scalp: a tonic or scalp spray is one you do apply to your scalp. You will find those under scalp care as well.
  • Just the scent: a hair perfume, lovely over a dry shampoo on day three.

Mist, leave-in or oil: which do you choose?

The three look alike and differ mainly in weight. A mist is the lightest and works every day, on fine hair too. A leave-in conditioner is creamier and gives more nourishment, which suits thick, curly or porous hair. A hair oil is the heaviest and goes on your ends.

They do not clash. Plenty of people use a mist over the lengths and a few drops of oil on the ends.

Everything for your hair routine

What to look out for

  • Fine or quickly greasy hair: choose a watery mist and stay off your scalp.
  • Coloured hair: a mist with a UV filter holds your colour longer.
  • Following the Curly Girl Method? Check for silicones, sulphates and drying alcohol.
  • Taking it with you? Mind the size. Above 100 ml a spray is not allowed in hand luggage.
