Brushes for your eyeshadow, eyeliner and blending

An eye look is not made by the colours but by the way they flow into each other, and that is exactly what your brushes do. An eyeshadow brush picks up pigment and places it precisely on your lid, a blending brush then takes the hard edges out and an eyeliner brush sets the line that finishes your look. At Boozyshop you will find all your eye brushes together: shaders, blenders, smudgers, angled brushes and thin precision brushes.

Which eye brushes do you need?

Three brushes are enough to create a complete eye look. A flat, slightly denser shader brush picks up a lot of pigment and presses the colour onto your lid, so that is the one for your main colour. A fluffy blending brush has longer, looser bristles and moves back and forth in your crease to work the transitions away. A thin brush then finishes your line and your inner corner. If you want to expand, a small smudger brush for your lower lash line is the logical next step.

What does a blending brush actually do?

A blending brush applies almost no colour, it moves colour that is already there. Its bristles are longer and softer, so they give way and push the colour outwards more gently without wiping everything off. Use it without extra product if you can, with small sweeping motions above your crease rather than on it. That keeps the intensity on your lid and only the edge disappears.

Which eyeliner brush suits your line?

With an eyeliner brush it comes down to the shape of the bristles, because that decides the line you get.

  • Thin and pointed for a sharp, fine line and a precise wing.
  • Angled if you want to lay the brush against your lash line in one motion.
  • Flat and small to pick up gel from a pot and build the line thicker.
  • Smudger to soften a line you have already set or smoke it out.

Gel liner and loose pigments ask for a firm brush that holds its shape, because a brush that is too soft bends away the moment you apply pressure.

How do you build an eye look with brushes?

Start with a light colour across your whole lid as a base. Then place your mid tone with the shader brush in your crease and blend it out with your blending brush. Build your darkest colour in the outer corner and keep it on a smaller brush, because that is where you want control. Only set your line once your eyeshadow is done, that way the line stays sharp. Finish with a lighter colour or shimmer on the centre of your lid and in your inner corner.

A brush for cream shadow, gel and glitter

Cream and liquid eyeshadows ask for a dense, firm brush or a silicone applicator, because those do not soak up the product. For glitter and loose pigments a flat, dense brush works best: it presses the glitter onto your lid instead of scattering it across your face. A silicone brush is especially handy here, because it picks up gel and glitter well and rinses clean with water.

How do you clean eye brushes?

Eye brushes work right next to your eyes, so hygiene counts even more here. Wash them every week or two with lukewarm water and a brush cleanser or brush soap, and more often if you use cream shadows or gel liner. An eyeliner brush with gel on it really wants wiping after every use, otherwise the product dries between the bristles and you lose the point. Keep the bristles pointing down, squeeze gently, reshape them and let them dry flat or upside down.
