What is tanning exactly?
Tanning is an umbrella term for everything that gives your skin a bronzed colour. Broadly speaking there are two routes. With self tanning, an ingredient that reacts with the top layer of your skin creates the colour, so no sun is involved. Some products give an instant tan straight away, others develop over a few hours into a deeper shade. When tanning in the sun you use a tanning oil, gel or cream that's made to help your skin colour faster and more evenly while you're outside.
Self tanning or tanning oil: which do you choose?
Want colour without the sun, all year round? Then a self tanner is your best choice. You decide how light or deep you go by how often you use it, and after a few days the colour fades away evenly so it's easy to top up.
Heading into the sun instead? Then you use a tanning oil or gel. Do check the SPF on the packaging: a tanning oil with SPF 0 does not protect your skin. If you want to tan and stay protected, pick a version with SPF or combine it with a good sunscreen.
The types of tanning products at a glance
Mousse absorbs quickly and is easy to apply evenly. Spray gives a fine mist and is ideal for tricky spots like your back. Lotion feels nourishing and hydrating, lovely if you want to build your colour gradually. Gel and tanning oil give a beautiful glow without a heavy or sticky layer. With drops you mix colour into your own day cream or body lotion, so you decide exactly how intense it gets. Self tan for your face
For your face it's best to use a face tanning product: a milder formula, better suited to the skin there. Think tanning drops you mix with your day cream, or a light formula you apply directly. Apply it evenly, take it down your neck for a smooth transition and work in thin layers. That way you build up gently and avoid patches.
Step by step: how to apply self tan
1. Cleanse your skin. Tan clings more evenly to clean skin. Use a shower gel or mild cleanser.
2. Scrub. Remove dead skin cells with a body scrub or exfoliating mitt, paying extra attention to knees, elbows and ankles.
3. Moisturise dry areas. A little body lotion on knees, elbows and ankles stops your tan from grabbing too dark there.
4. Apply with a mitt. Work section by section and blend well. A tanning mitt prevents streaks and orange hands.
5. Let it develop. Give your tan time to develop, avoid water in the meantime and wear loose clothing.
Tips for an even tan without streaks
Take your time and work section by section. Better a little product blended well than too much at once. Don't forget your hands, feet and the transitions at your ankles and wrists. And it really doesn't have to be perfect first time, it gets easier every time.
Aftercare: how to keep your colour looking good
Moisturise daily with a body lotion or body butter and your tan will fade more evenly. Not happy with the result? A tan remover or a scrub takes the colour off neatly so you can simply start again.
